Clubbed nails are often a sign of a health condition that needs treatment, such as lung cancer. Treating the underlying condition may help nails return to normal. Nail clubbing itself isn’t harmful and usually isn’t painful. Sometimes, nail clubbing occurs in a healthy person without an obvious reason. However, it’s often a sign of a serious health condition that needs medical care, so don’t wait to get it evaluated by a healthcare provider. After treating the cause of nail clubbing, your nails may gradually return to normal. However, nail clubbing isn’t always reversible.

Clubbed Nails Cause

There are several causes of acquired nail clubbing which include infectious, neoplastic, inflammatory, and vascular diseases. Isolated nail clubbing can be a benign hereditary condition but given the multiple associated conditions underlying etiology should be ruled out.

The increase of PDGF and VEGF increases blood vessel vasculature and also permeability and ultimately causes tissue changes.

Most causes of clubbing are acquired, meaning they develop after birth.

In some cases, clubbing can also be a benign, hereditary condition. That develops due to genetic mutations.

Conditions that reduce lung function can reduce circulating oxygen levels and trigger clubbing.

The use of tobacco is harmful and hazardous to health. There are extremely dangerous substances in tobacco in many forms. This includes substances like nicotine, tar, acetone, carbon monoxide, etc.

Smoking tobacco in the form of cigarettes or cigars is prevalent globally, even though the harmful effects of doing so are well known. Smoking causes not only temporary issues but also long-term serious health conditions.

One of the very common signs of regular smokers is nail clubbing.

Because nail clubbing is usually a sign of an underlying health condition, providers typically direct treatment at the underlying cause. For example, your treatment plan may include:

  • Chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, or medications for lung cancer.
  • A gluten-free diet for celiac disease.
  • Heart surgery for congenital heart conditions.
  • Medications or surgery for hyperthyroidism.
